Asmara

* * *

Hustler publisher Larry Flynt takes the subject so seriously that he says he is working on a book—his third—to be titled Politics, Porn & Power: An Intimate Look at Sexual Hypocrisy and Its Impact on American Politics.

Sarkozy's love life: diamonds, sex and rivalry
By Kerstin Gehmlich

PARIS (Reuters) - Nicolas Sarkozy's love life has turned into a tale of sex, diamonds and rivalry amid reports that he gave similar rings to his new girlfriend Carla Bruni and his former wife Cecilia.

And three new books are making it quite clear that Cecilia is back on the scene with a vengeance following her divorce from the French president last October.

Pictures of a holidaying Sarkozy, 52, in gold necklace and sunglasses as he embraces former model Bruni, more than 10 years his junior, have dominated glossy magazines, while newspapers devote their front pages to "President Bling-Bling" and his glamorous Italian lover.

Sarkozy, who took office in May on a promise to break with the past and be a hands-on president, has said he wants to be open about his relationship with Bruni, whom he hinted he intends to marry.

But new books suggest former first lady Cecilia, 50, has not gone quietly since the couple finally split.

"Cecilia thinks without doubt that Carla Bruni is not necessarily the one who will make him forget her that quickly," Yves Derai, author of "Ruptures", one of the three books, told VSD magazine.

"She even thinks she's on a different level. Basically, this successor is not the worst one for her."

To add juice to the tale of the two tall brunettes, who look remarkably alike, Gala magazine said Sarkozy had offered the same kind of pink heart-shaped, diamond ring to Bruni which his ex-wife had been seen wearing last summer.

"CECILIA, THE BOND GIRL"

The role of Cecilia, also a former model, has intrigued France since Sarkozy and she briefly separated in 2005.

The couple reunited in 2006, but Cecilia, whom French media describe as an enigma, made few public appearances during her husband's election campaign and his first months in office.

She was quoted as describing Sarkozy in unflattering terms in the book "Cecilia", also due out this week. But her lawyer said she had taken legal action to hold up publication.

All three books describe Cecilia as a powerful woman whose influence on Sarkozy did not cease when they separated.

In "Ruptures", Derai says Cecilia handed Sarkozy a memorandum at the time of their divorce, including "a list of everything he should accomplish or avoid doing if he wants to succeed in his five-year term".

"She supposedly also mentioned the names of those he should never trust but also those authentic loyal people he could count on," Derai and co-author Michael Darmon write.

Cecilia played an active role in Libya last summer, travelling there to secure the release of six Bulgarian medics convicted of infecting Libyan children with the HIV virus.

Like a "James Bond Girl from Neuilly" (the Sarkozys' suburb near Paris), Cecilia supervised French officials as they freed the medics from jail, the authors write.

Cecilia had no doubts about her future role, the book says.

"They think I'm no longer present, but I'm more so than before," it quotes her as saying. "As I'm not asking for anything, I'll remain the only one he really listens to."
